The Capricorn Region is four great holiday destinations in one. Rockhampton and its immediate surrounds are graced with superb examples of its European and Aboriginal history, while the adjacent Capricorn Coast has beautiful coastal rainforests, sub-tropical islands such as Great Keppel Island and unspoiled sandy beaches. To the west, the colourful patchwork of diverse farming, cattle and mining industries, captures those who travel to Capricorns Rural Hinterland. The Central Highlands and Gemfields offer visitors the opportunity to strike it rich fossicking for gemstones.
On the Reef:
The Great Barrier Reef is easily accessible from this region,
allowing visitors to enjoy a mixture of sub-tropical fish and
coral in crystal clear waters. Diving, snorkelling and fishing
trips are available for the day or longer periods. For those who
dont want to get their feet wet, an Underwater Observatory
is available at Middle Island.
Bushwalking:
Well signed, self guided walks ranging in length and difficulty
are available on some of the islands in the Keppel Bay Islands
National Park on the Capricorn Coast, the Berserker Ranges around
Rockhampton, Blackdown Tableland National Park and Carnarvon Gorge
- Carnarvon National Park. These tracks provide superb views of
the surrounding bushlands and beaches, and the chance to see some
of the local wildlife in its natural environment.
Talk to the
animals:
The Rockhampton Botanical Gardens and Zoo and Cooberrie Park Flora
and Fauna Sanctuary on the Capricorn Coast both have a variety
of animals along with shaded picnic areas. For something different,
visitors could try a Camel Jaunt along the beach, or take an informative
and interesting visit to the Koorana Crocodile Farm. You will
see more than just bats at the award winning Olsens Capricorn
Caverns and nearby Cammoo Caves.
